Post Episode: The Wedding. "I need entertaining." He looked at her, and suddenly realised she was doing it again. Helping
to keep him grounded, when previously all he had been doing was losing
his awareness of everything else around him but the campaign. Suddenly polling numbers and budget cuts no longer seemed so important.
Not compared to the woman sitting beside him. Somehow, during the long
tension between them after she had left the White House until joining
the same campaign, they had found their way back to each other again.
Demolished the walls they had put up between them, in a vain attempt
to protect themselves, and begun to lay the foundations of their bond
once more. He held out his hand to her. "May I have the this dance?" She smiled at him and took it. "Sure." Santos was still in deep conversation with Leo and various bodies of
the democratic party during the reception. The first dance reserved for the bride and the groom had been and gone,
along with the speeches, leaving the dancefloor free to be conquered
by the guests. The President was enjoying a dance with his daughter,
his mind temporarily away from the Mid Eastern Asian warfare. Leo happened to glance up from his discussion when he saw them. He
smiled, his attempts at persuading the congressman to not replace Josh
temporarily pushed aside. He touched the future President's shoulder
and said, "look." Santos obeyed, and stopped talking. The other members of the discussion
followed suit, turning round. Amongst the melee of dancers, two campaign staffers were dancing together
as close as one could be on the dancefloor. Their foreheads were touching,
their eyes were closed, their bodies perfectly attuned to the slow music. The former chairman of the democratic party turned back into the discussion
with a smile. "I don't think we need to talk about this anymore,"
he said, "he has all he needs to win the campaign." "He does?" Santos queried, puzzled. The democratic members patted Leo on the back. "We'll leave you
to explain," the former chairman replied before walking away. Leo smiled at Santos. "Congressman, there's something you need to know," he began. The End. © Danielle Harwood-Atkinson 2021. All rights reserved.
