Obi-Wan Kenobi barely listened as Padmé rattled off trivial information about where the twins’ favorite foods were located and what to do if they woke up in the middle of the night.

Anakin and Obi-Wan had just arrived and Padmé had started briefing him on babysitting duty even before she kissed Anakin.

“Padmé, with all due respect I know how to take care of them. You seem to forget I do it every time we’re back on Coruscant.”

She looked flustered for a moment but conceded. He smiled warmly.

“I know, I know, they’re your babies and you want to make sure nothing goes wrong,” He placed his hand between her shoulders and gently pushed her towards Anakin, “But why don’t you worry about him a little more and about me a little less. It’s Valentine’s Day after all.”

Anakin produced a dozen roses from behind his back and Padmé lit up, throwing her arms around him. Anakin smiled at him in thanks.

Obi-Wan had forced him to buy the roses from a vendor on the way there, as he hadn’t bought anything else for her. Anakin insisted Padmé always told him not to buy her things but even Obi-Wan knew if you didn’t buy your significant other at least SOMETHING on Valentines Day you were in big trouble. Anakin was always asking him for advice on simple things. Her favorite food, her birthday…

How did you NOT know to at least buy her roses on Valentine’s Day?

He obviously knew more about Padmé than Anakin did.

Then why did she pick you over me.

Obi-Wan forced a smile back at Anakin.

The twins came screaming out of their room, knowing a visitor was here.

“Daddy, Daddy, Da-…Uncle Obi!” Leia instantly changed her tune at the sight of Kenobi and she ran into his arms giggling. Obi-Wan picked her up and kissed her while Luke ran to Anakin, seeing as Leia had occupied Obi-Wan’s attention. Padmé quickly put the flowers in a vase with water and set them on the end table.

“See? Everything’s fine. Now you two lovebirds go have fun. But not TOO much fun. I can only watch two at a time.” He joked with a hint of seriousness.

“Yeah, yeah, whatever old man. Don’t let them wear you out too much.” Anakin smiled, almost triumphantly, and put his arm around Padmé after she’d said a quick goodbye to the twins and they headed out the door.

Gods he’s such a dick sometimes…

Obi-Wan immediately grabbed Luke and laid him on the floor, dragging him by the legs as he giggled insanely: he was a Wampa and Luke would be his dinner. Leia jumped in front of him to save her brother and the game began.

The twins went to bed easily, as they always did for him. He got their energy out and did their nightly ritual of recounting one of his and Anakin’s adventures, tucking them in, then kissing them goodnight.

The rest of the night Kenobi was left to his own devices. He watched the HoloNews for public Clone War updates, which were almost never true or at least a month behind, so he settled on a book.

As he lounged away, lost in his book, Padmé walked into the room and threw her bag on the couch, and stared at him.

“Where’s Anakin?” He asked not looking up from his page.

“I don’t know, I ditched him.”

“What?” This was enough to make him stop reading midsentence. “As in dumped him, or you just dropped him on the side of the road but are still in love with him to him.”

“Dumped him. We had a fight.” She really didn’t seem that torn up about it.

“About what?”

“You.”

“Me? What do I have to do with anything?”

“Anakin thinks I have some secret crush on you.”

Obi-Wan raised an eyebrow. “Why would he think that?”

“Well…”She stepped closer to him.

Her heels clacked, her dress swayed in slow motion it seemed.

“The thing is, I kinda do.”

She stood toe to toe with him, and he held his breath.

“Well are you going to say anything?” She quizzed expectantly.

“Uh, Padmé I don’t know what to say. I don’t really think of you that way.”

You’re an idiot Kenobi. She’s standing right in front of you and you’re denying it to her face.

“I don’t believe you. I think you’ve just been repressed so long you’re scared.” She parted her knees and sunk them into the back of the couch, straddling him. He squirmed.

“Don’t worry Master Kenobi, I’ll take care of you.” Her lips gently parted his. He could feel the attack waiting to be unleashed but she was bottling it up, testing the waters first. Give in. Without question. No.

“Stop.” He pushed her off to the side and stood up.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING. Being a lunatic, that’s what you’re doing. You don’t deserve to live.

“Why?” She questioned, in no way deterred from her goal.

“Because…” Obi-Wan looked for his cloak. If she was home he could escape this terrible situation. Wonderful. This wonderful situation. That you’re currently throwing away.

“Because you’re married, and have children and I’m not your husband.” His cloak was luckily on the arm of the chair and he snatched it quickly, backpedalling towards the door. She was following him.

“Who cares about Anakin. You’re more of a father to those kids anyway. Anakin told me he asks you for advice on what to do for me all the time. You seem to know me so well. I just want to get to know you better too.”

His back finally hit the door and he reached for the button to open it, but she blocked him and pressed herself into him.

“Don’t you want me?” She stared pleading, yet with secret hunger in her eyes.

“I do want you, Padmé. That’s the problem.”

“I don’t see any problem at all.” She attacked him this time. Her mouth worked its magic and her hands ran everywhere. He did not try to escape.

“Still having problems?” She asked, smirking. Her hands ventured lower and lower-

Obi-Wan jumped a foot and sat up when he heard Padmé drop her keys. His book was on his chest. He’d fallen asleep reading.

“Hey, forgot to grab my present for Anakin. How could I be so dumb!” She put her palm to her forehead in a ‘duh’ motion. “Did they go to bed for you?”

“Bed?”

“Yes.” She stared at him like he was an idiot. “Did the twins fall asleep fast?”

“OH. Yeah. Just like always.”

She ran into the bedroom and brought back a box wrapped in annoyingly bright pink paper.

“Thank you soooo much for babysitting on Valentine’s Day, Obi. I’m sure you’d rather be somewhere else.”

“It’s not like I had someone to see.” He said simply. She looked upset. Maybe even regretful…

“I wish you’d find someone, Obi. That Code’s making the galaxy waste a good man.”

“I wouldn’t say I’m being wasted.”

She grabbed a rose from the dozen and handed it to him. “Here. I want you to know at least someone loves you.” She kissed him on the forehead and hurried out, back to Anakin.

He stared at the spot where she’d stood for a long time, his mind wandering yet thinking nothing at all.

He didn’t notice the few drops of blood that fell on his tunic from the thorn cutting into his hand.
